Symptoms of Ego degradation

No matter how long your personal growth journey takes or which method you have chosen to understand the truth about yourself, you will inevitably hit a wall at times. Between moments of clarity, understanding, and *samadhi* (Sanskrit: connection, union), you will experience a sense of emptiness – something you might mistake for depression, leaving you wondering how this could happen when you were already well on your way to finding your true self…

I see only two reasons for finding yourself in this void, and today we will focus on one:

The symptoms of ego dissolution

But before we delve into what this process entails and why you shouldn’t fear it, I need to explain what the Ego means to me.

What is the Ego?

If you have already explored some of the content on my website, you may have noticed my view that, regarding any subject matter that transcends the analytical brain’s capacity to comprehend, everyone is right – and yet no one is. Within this dimension, any insight into higher knowledge is a matter of observation and trust in the truth of the information that emerges when we manage to silence – even for a moment – our incessantly chattering brains.

As I see it, the Ego is a construct comprising two components, formed by Energy that is constantly at work; when this Energy condenses to a specific density (specific because it varies depending on the substance), it creates matter. These components are the brain (not to be confused with the Mind, which I understand to be something far greater than the brain) and the personality (a concept encompassing both innate traits and social conditioning). When these two components are placed within a body, the result is a human being.

To me, the “pure Ego” is what many refer to as the Inner Child. However, I do not agree with the idea that the Inner Child requires healing for wounds acquired over a lifetime, and so on; I view the matter somewhat differently.

The third dimension operates by its own rules!

The realities of existing in the third dimension have imposed something upon the pure Ego that I like to call an “onion.” This onion is simply social conditioning and all the processes – including development, learning, and indoctrination, along with the resulting emotions and traumas – that prevented the Ego from fulfilling its purpose from the very start: working through karmic lessons. Lessons set by the Mind and the Higher Self.

Since the opportunity to fulfill these tasks was effectively closed off to us, the Ego lost sight of the meaning of existence and began living its own “onion-like” life. It is precisely this process – peeling away the onion layers of the Ego (layers formed by false patterns, beliefs, old traumas, pain, and a sense of disconnection from All That Is) and restoring the awareness of Oneness – that I call Ego degradation.

Symptoms of Ego Degradation

The symptoms of Ego degradation closely resemble those of depression; therefore, remember that if you are unable to cope with something on your own, you should always consult a doctor!

Here is how you can recognize that you are undergoing ego dissolution:

  • insomnia or oversleeping,
  • loss of appetite or compulsive overeating,
  • obsession with something or someone,
  • mood swings,
  • weeping for no apparent reason,
  • a sense of meaninglessness,
  • lack of motivation to act,
  • a need for isolation,
  • doubting the purpose of your past actions,
  • financial difficulties,
  • nightmares often featuring people from your past,
  • memories becoming blurred,
  • a desire to simply vanish into thin air (NOTE! BUT NOT TO COMMIT SUICIDE!),
  • body-wide aches and pains,
  • pressure around the eyes,
  • heightened senses,
  • moments of strange agency and the ability to foresee events,
  • a desire to change career paths,
  • searching for meaning amidst moments of meaninglessness,
  • philosophizing,
  • feeling misunderstood by others,
  • loved ones drifting away,
  • the appearance of new people who do not seem as draining as those who have moved on.

These symptoms – sometimes difficult to accept – are an essential part of the process that will change your life forever. Restoring the Ego to its pristine, factory settings guarantees peace of mind and a consistently pleasant way of handling tasks; and although the path there is bumpy, ultimately, we all want to live from the place of that “Inner Child” we all long for.

Conflict of interest

Theoretically, then, there shouldn’t be any problem with this. However, there is a catch… You might have already guessed that the issue lies with the brain – the tool designed from the very beginning to support the Ego in carrying out tasks. Yet, there is one fundamental item on its agenda that creates an internal conflict of interest: survival.

At a level that seems absurd to a conscious human being, the brain equates the “degradation” of the Ego with death. This is hardly surprising when you look at the list of symptoms. It certainly doesn’t help that one of the synonyms for this process – used incorrectly, in my view – is “Ego death.”

Just don’t get angry with yourself!

So, don’t be angry with yourself just because you sometimes feel like you’re sabotaging your own efforts or because change seems terrifying. It isn’t your fault that your brain operates the way it does. Nor is it the brain’s fault that its primary function is keeping the body alive and ensuring the survival of the species – otherwise, we wouldn’t be here anymore. Accept that things will simply be this way for a while, and move forward in alignment with your own unique process.

However, should you ever lose your way and not know what is happening, I am here.
